Saturday Youth Transition Program Dress for Success, Guest Lecture Series

“Clothing is communication,” this was a portion of the lesson provided to the participants in the Saturday Youth Transition Program’s Dress for Success Guest Lecture Series, on Saturday, January 25, 2020. The teens had an opportunity to sit down with Mimi Plange, Fashion Designer. The teens learned how texture meshed with the attire guidelines and learned what fabrics were best suited for various types of wear. They also learned about the other careers in fashion including buyer and pattern maker besides the familiar careers of model and designer. The students found inspiration from her life story. Mimi’s career began with an interest in fashion that led her to obtain degrees in architecture and fashion. She then used that foundation to work in various positions in the fashion industry, both design and non-design, then in major mainstream design houses until she founded her own fashion line. One program participant found inspiration in Mimi’s story of holding fast to her dream despite the naysayers, stating, “you have encouraged me to continue to dream my dreams, thank you!”
