Local eye experts highlight Lighthouse Guild’s free, virtual vision forum

In these COVID-19 days of remote working and learning, folks are spending untold hours in front of their computers and looking at their handheld devices.

Not surprisingly, more cases of eyecare issues — including eye strain, tearing, burning, dry eyes, fluctuating vision and headaches — have been reported nationwide.

In addition, the blue light emitted from smart devices can affect melatonin production and therefore interfere with sleep patterns.

That’s why on Wednesday at 4 p.m. the charitable vision advocacy organization Lighthouse Guild is hosting a free, virtual forum on preventing vision loss and related conditions that will feature two local eye experts — optometrist April Jasper of West Palm Beach and ophthalmologist Dr. Terence P. O’Brien of Palm Beach Gardens.

During the online session, entitled “Vision for Life:  What You Need to Know to Prevent Vision Loss…During Covid-19 and Beyond,” Jasper and O’Brien will be joined by Dr. Calvin Roberts, president and CEO of Lighthouse Guild.

The session will provide tips on how to maintain good eye health and preserve vision through exercise, diet, protection from UV rays and more. The doctors will also address vision care for people as they age, and the prevention and treatment for macular degeneration, glaucoma, cataracts, and diabetic retinopathy.
