Lighthouse Guild Highlights
Paul Misiti has joined Lighthouse Guild as Chief of Staff. Paul brings 28 years of progressive leadership experience in eye health, including finance, operations, project management, and business development. As Chief of Staff, he will manage the organization’s operations and will work closely with the CEO and executive team to implement high-priority initiatives in line with the organization’s mission and strategy. He received a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University and an MBA in Finance from the University of Rochester.
Cheryl A. Pemberton-Graves, MPA has been promoted to Chief Volunteer Officer for Lighthouse Guild. In her new role, she is responsible for the Volunteer Resources Department and all its initiatives to support the organization and the people we serve. Cheryl joined Lighthouse Guild in 2007.
President and CEO, Calvin W. Roberts, MD and Chief of Staff, Paul Misiti, presented “Bringing For-Profit Chops to Nonprofit Leadership” to The Vanguard Network, a membership organization for C-suite leaders across business sectors.
Dr. Roberts spoke at the 2020 Collaborative Community on Ophthalmic Imaging (CCOI) Conference, sponsored by the FDA. He presented as an advocate for the unique needs of people who are visually impaired in the Patient Advocacy Group Discussion.
William Seiple, PhD, Chief Research Officer of Lighthouse Guild Research Institute and President Emeritus Alan R. Morse, JD, PhD authored with along with Annie M. Wu, MD; Nidhi Talwar, MA; Sean O. Hansen, MD; Paul P. Lee, MD, JD; and Joshua D. Stein, MD, MS published “Reduction in Mammography Screening for Breast Cancer among Visually Impaired Women.” Ophthalmology (2020) doi.org/10.1016/j.ophtha.2020.07.029. Linda Gerra, Ed presented “Introduction to Visual Impairment in Children” to occupational therapy students at Long Island University as part of Lighthouse Guild’s professional training program.
Carol Moog, COMS presented “Disability Awareness: Visual Impairment, Blindness and Movement Strategies” to employees of the Department of Transportation. Carol also presented at Columbia University Department of Physical Therapy’s Perspectives in Practice on approaches for appropriate interaction for establishing effective communication when treating patients with vision loss and safe orientation and mobility and travel strategies.
Bruce Rosenthal, OD, FAAO, Chief of Low Vision Services, presented to Columbia Ophthalmology residents, “Management of the Visually Impaired Patient and Resources for Vision Rehabilitation and Low Vision.”
Laura Sperazza, OD FAAO, Director of Vision Rehabilitation Services, presented at the Bascom Palmer Inter-American Conference on “Technology and the Low Vision Patient” featuring current and technologies that help patients with low vision regain their independence. Dr. Sperazza also presented to New York University Langone Ophthalmology residents, “Vision Rehabilitation Options for the Low Vision Patient.”
Cathleen Wirts, Chief Communications Officer, and Janet Weinstein, Director of Outreach, presented to New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai Ophthalmology residents and attending physicians, “Partners in Care for People with Vision Loss,” outlining the role of vision rehabilitation on the continuum of care for patients with low vision and the referral process.
President Emeritus Alan R. Morse, JD, PhD has become a member of the board of governors of the ARVO Foundation for Eye Research. His nomination was endorsed unanimously by both the Board of Trustees of ARVO and the Board of Governors of the ARVO Foundation.
