State-of-the-Art Vision Care

To further provide exceptional care to patients who receive our Low Vision services, Lighthouse Guild has acquired an Ultra-Widefield (UWF) retinal imaging device. UWF retinal imaging is an important tool for screening and diagnosis issues, such as retinal detachment, glaucoma, cataracts, retinal holes/retinal tears, and age-related macular degeneration, it can also indicate evidence of non-eye diseases, such as diabetes, hypertension, and certain cancers. Unlike previous imaging devices, the UWF retinal imaging device can capture 50% more of the retinal area enabling eye care professionals to see more, discover more, and provide more effective care.

Dr. Bruce Rosenthal, Chief of Low Vision Service says, “It is very helpful to gain a wide-field view of the retina. I use this essential tool when I talk to my patients and their caregivers and family about the effect of the changes in their eyes and how it affects every day functional vision.”

In addition, UWF retinal imaging devices enable eye care providers to monitor the progression of eye diseases like diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and glaucoma and gives them insight into the functional loss that makes it difficult for patients to read or identify faces.

“UWF technology helps us tailor vision rehabilitation to compensate for the areas of lost vision our patients have and direct them to avoid or look around scotomas (holes in the visual field) so they can use low vision devices more effectively,” explains Dr. Laura Sperazza, Director of Vision Rehabilitation Services.
