Sherrill has glaucoma and gradually lost her vision due to the disease. After her brother’s friend recommended Lighthouse Guild to her, she had a low vision exam with Dr. Bruce Rosenthal, Chief of Low Vision Services. She shares, “I first met Dr. Rosenthal in 2019, and my whole life changed. He was the first doctor to give me a pair of glasses where I could read close up.”
Sherrill has always been an independent person, having worked in Customer Service and Collections for over 20 years at Bell South and having her own business selling bags, scarves and other accessories. She lives in Manhattan and travels independently. “If I can’t walk, I take a bus. I try to do as much as I can for myself.” We made sure she could maintain her independence. Lilly Harris, Lighthouse Guild Vision Rehabilitation Therapist, worked with Sherrill — helping her with a talking watch, utensils, writing assistance, and everyday activities. “Lighthouse Guild has motivated me to know that I can be anything. I can do anything I want to do in spite of my situation.”
In addition to Low Vision Services and Independent Living Support, Sherrill received Orientation and Mobility and Career Services training. She explains, “I never knew blind people worked. I’m ready to go to work. I finished eight weeks of training at Lighthouse Guild.”
