WORLD SIGHT DAY 2016
This year’s theme is Universal Eye Health and the global issue of avoidable blindness.
According to the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness, about 285 million people are visually impaired worldwide. Preventable causes are as high as 80% of the total global visual impairment burden.
How can you prevent a visual impairment? Early detection. Eye examinations on a regular basis contribute to your overall health.
Three ways you can celebrate World Sight Day
- Make an appointment for a comprehensive dilated eye exam. In addition to an eye chart test, your eye doctor will use drops to dilate your pupils to get a better view of the back of your eyes. If you find out you’re in the early stages of an eye disease such as glaucoma or age-related macular degeneration, then you know you’re in good hands. Your eye care professional will help you to achieve and maintain the highest possible level of eye health and visual function.
- Speak up if your vision changes. Has your vision changed recently? Are you noticing blurry spots or do you find yourself squinting? Time to make an appointment. An eye doctor should be made aware of any gradual changes in your vision so the necessary actions can be taken to maintain the health of your eyes.
- Encourage family members to have their eyes examined. Especially include children if they haven’t had their eyes examined by an eye care professional. Diabetes is a leading cause of avoidable blindness. Urge loved ones who have diabetes to get their eyes examined.
