In honor of Low Vision Awareness Month, Lighthouse Guild’s Vision for Life: A Virtual Forum will focus on maintaining eye health during COVID-19. We will also discuss factors that affect eye health such as aging, sun exposure, and eye disease — including macular degeneration, glaucoma, cataracts, and diabetic retinopathy. Dr. April Jasper and Dr. Terrence P. O’Brien join Dr. Calvin W. Roberts to provide insights on what you can do to maintain good eye health and preserve vision — from exercise, to UV ray protection, to health tips for people as they age.

About Our Presenters

Calvin W. Roberts, MD, President and CEO of Lighthouse Guild, has a unique blend of academic, clinical, business, and hands-on product development experience.  Dr. Roberts is a Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at Weill Cornell Medical College. Formerly Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer, Eye Care, at Bausch Health Companies, where he coordinated global development and research efforts across their vision care, pharmaceutical and surgical business units. As a practicing ophthalmologist from 1982 to 2008, he performed more than 10,000 cataract surgeries and 5,000 refractive and other corneal surgeries. He is credited with developing surgical therapies, over-the-counter products for vision care, prescription ocular therapeutics, and innovative treatment regimens. A graduate of Princeton University and the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University, Dr. Roberts completed his internship and ophthalmology residency at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center in New York.

April Jasper OD, FAAO graduated from Nova Southeastern University College of Optometry with highest honors in 1995. Her family of 6 (Awesome Husband, 2 beautiful children and 2 dogs) live in West Palm Beach, Florida. Dr. Jasper completed her residency in primary care, ocular disease and contact lenses in Boston, Massachusetts where she also held a position as adjunct professor at NEWENCO. Dr. Jasper has served her patients and colleagues as president of the Florida Optometric Association 2016-2017. She continues to share her knowledge and expertise around the world authoring numerous publications, lecturing and as chief editor of Optometric Management magazine. Terrence P. O’Brien, MD, is Professor of Ophthalmology, Charlotte Breyer Rodgers Distinguished Chair in Ophthalmology and Director, Refractive Surgery Service for Bascom Palmer Eye Institute of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Prior to Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, Dr. O’Brien served as Director of Ocular Infectious Diseases at The Wilmer Eye Institute of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He was also the founder of the Eye Microbiology Lab at Wilmer Eye Institute. As an expert in the fields of refractive surgery and ocular infectious diseases, Dr. O’Brien is an internationally renowned physician, researcher, and educator. He is recognized as an exceptional surgeon, with clinical specialties in cataracts and intraocular lens, laser vision correction, corneal and external diseases, ocular infectious diseases and corneal transplant surgery. Dr. O’Brien’s significant contributions to the field of ophthalmology began when he helped to create antibiotics in eye drop form. Since then, he led the way as a top researcher in refractive surgery techniques, the avoidance and management of complications of refractive surgery, ocular infectious diseases, ocular microbiology and corneal transplant surgery research. He was the Past President of the Ocular Microbiology & Immunology Group, on the Executive Boards of the International Conference of Eye Infections, and an active member of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons. Dr. O’Brien is a graduate of University of Michigan Medical School, completed his ophthalmology residency at The Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins University School. Practice: 7101 Fairway Drive
